四方當代美術(shù)館成立于2005年8月，分別坐落在南京的玄武區(qū)、浦口區(qū)與江寧區(qū)，共有展覽面積近8000平方米，是面向中國當代藝術(shù)，以展覽、收藏、研究、教育為主要功能，以改善中國當代藝術(shù)的生存環(huán)境，提高公眾對當代藝術(shù)的認知度，倡導當代藝術(shù)與全社會進行交流為宗旨的復合型民間藝術(shù)機構(gòu)。我館專門委托享有國際聲譽的美國建筑大師StevenHoll先生與著名奧地利前衛(wèi)建筑師RainerPirker先生分別設計浦口區(qū)與江寧區(qū)兩處展館建筑，以構(gòu)建符合展示當代藝術(shù)氣質(zhì)的空間。
FoundedinAugust2005,NanjingSquareGalleryofContemporaryArtsetsherexhibitionplacesinXuanwuDistrict,PukouDistrictandJiangningDistrictinNanjingseparately,whichare8000squaremetersintotal.It’sanunofficiallycompoundartinstitution,withthemainfunctionsofexhibition,preservation,researchandeducation.TheprincipleofthisgalleryistoreformtheenvironmentforcontemporaryChineseart,improvethepublicunderstandingofit,andpromotethecommunicationbetweencontemporaryartandthewholesociety.Tocreatetheproperspace,whichcouldhelpshowingcontemporaryart,thegalleryinvitedtheworld-knownAmericanarchitectMr.StevenHollandAustrianarchitectMr.RainerPirkertodesignthesetwoexhibitionbuildingsinPukouDistrictandJiangningDistrictrespectively.
我館計劃在美術(shù)館館體建筑落成以后，每五年舉辦一屆當代藝術(shù)大型文獻展。并且為了及時反映當代藝術(shù)思想觀念的變化趨向，我館將不定期舉辦有建設性的主題展覽，以調(diào)動本地區(qū)當代藝術(shù)的學術(shù)氣氛。館內(nèi)還將針對中國一百多年的異于傳統(tǒng)的視覺表達史，專門開辟了重要藝術(shù)家作品的永久性陳列館，常年向公眾開放，并且將開設關(guān)于當代藝術(shù)的講座向公眾普及當代藝術(shù)的知識。我館將根據(jù)自身條件，廣泛地開展當代藝術(shù)方面的地區(qū)與國際性的民間交流合作，參與國際性當代藝術(shù)活動，將四方當代美術(shù)館建設成公眾了解當代藝術(shù)一扇的窗口，藝術(shù)家創(chuàng)作當代藝術(shù)一座的基地，學者研究當代藝術(shù)一個的中心。
